<죽음을 넘어, 시대의 어둠을 넘어> 영문판 재출판을 위한

35년 전인 1980년 5월 대한민국 광주에서 전두환 신군부의 총칼에 민주주의를 염원하는 수백 명의 시민들이 죽거나 다치는 한국 현대사에서 가장 비극적이고 부끄러운 ‘사건’이 벌어졌습니다.
오늘날 그 희생은 고통과 절망으로 이어진 것이 아니라, 한국의 민주주의가 꽃피우는 계기가 되었습니다. 뿐만 아니라 전 세계에 자유와 인간의 존엄성을 지키기 위한 한국인들의 자랑스러운 역사로 기록되었습니다.
또한 5.18 민주화운동은 우리가 민주주의와 국민을 위한 정치를 펴는 데 큰 교훈을 주고 있습니다. 일찍이 김대중 전 대통령께서는 대통령 취임 뒤 처음으로 지난 1998년 8월 광주 망월동 묘역을 찾으셔서 “나는 광주 시민들과 5.18 영령들을 배신할 수 없었기 때문에 독재자들의 살해 협박에도 결코 굴할 수 없었다”라고 말씀하셨습니다.
<죽음을 넘어, 시대의 어둠을 넘어>는 이처럼 중대한 의미를 지닌 5.18 민주화운동의 현장을 가장 생생하게 기록한 기록물입니다. 특히 이 책의 영문판인 <Kwangju Diary: Beyond Death, Beyond the Darkness of the Age> (이하 ‘Kwangju Diary’)는 지난 1999년 미국에서 출판되어 전 세계에 5.18 민주화운동과 한국의 민주주의를 알리는 데 크게 기여하였습니다.
우리는 아무런 대가 없이 ‘Kwangju Diary'의 출판을 위해 수년 동안 애를 쓰신 설갑수(Kap Su Seol)님, 닉 매머타스(Nick Mamatas)님, 그리고 ‘Kwangju Diary’에 훌륭한 글을 써주신 브루스 커밍스(Bruce Cumings) 교수님과 팀 셔록(Tim Shorrock) 님에게 존경과 감사의 뜻을 전합니다.
최근 우리는 ‘Kwangju Diary’가 10여 년 전 절판되었다는 안타까운 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 대한민국을 넘어 세계 민주화, 인권운동사에 남는 역사적 ‘사건’인 5.18 민주화운동의 가장 중요한 기록물 중 하나인 <죽음을 넘어, 시대의 어둠을 넘어>의 유일한 공식 영문판인 ‘Kwangju Diary’가 절판되었다는 것은 매우 부끄러운 일입니다.
이에 우리는 대한민국 정부와 광주광역시를 비롯한 공적 기관이 ‘Kwangju Diary’의 재출판을 위해 나서도록 할 것입니다. 특히 우리는 빠른 시일 내에 ‘Kwangju Diary’가 재출판 될 수 있도록 하기 위해 관련 기관이 하루 속히 예산을 확보할 수 있도록 노력할 것입니다.

JOINT STATEMENT
OF MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY,
SUPPORTING REPUBLICATION OF ‘KWANGJU DIARY’
Thirty-five years ago, one of the most tragic and disgraceful ‘incidents’ in modern Korean history took place in the southwestern city Kwangju. Over the course of May 18-27, 1980, hundreds of Kwangju citizens were sacrificed for their aspirations for democracy at the hands of Chun Doo-Hwan's martial law forces.
Today, the Kwangju Democratization Movement is not only commemorated as a painful and tragic chapter of the country’s modern history, but also remembered as the watershed moment for its democracy. The Kwangju Democratization Movement went down as an inspiring moment for human freedom and dignity not only in Korea's national history but also in the world’s.
We, undersigned, are National Assembly members who have learned a grave lesson from the Kwangju Democratization Movement and who would like to be tribunes for the people and democracy. We remember that, in August 1998, then-President Kim Dae Jung became the first President who has ever visited and paid his respects at the graves of Kwangju-massacre victims. In a speech at the graveside, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate said the following, citing Kwangju as the source of his courage in defiance of military dictatorship, "I never gave in to dictators’ death threats because I was unable to betray Kwangju citizens and the souls of the May 18 victims.”
The <Beyond Death and Beyond the Darkness of the Age> is a true, vivid record of the Kwangju Democratization Movement. And its English version, the <Kwangju Diary: Beyond Death, Beyond the Darkness of the Age>, first published in 1999, became the must-read for anyone to understand the Korean democracy movement as it brought home the meaning of the Kwangju Democratization Movement and the nation’s democratization on an international scale.
We express our respect and gratitude to Messrs. Kap Su Seol, Nick Mamatas, Timothy Shorrock and Bruce Cumings for their multi-year efforts to publishing <Kwangju Diary> .
Yet, we only recently learned that <Kwangju Diary> has become out of print since 2005. It is disgraceful that the only historic English-language record documenting the Kwangju Democratization Movement has been out of print for almost a decade.
Therefore we call upon the governments of the Republic of Korea and Kwangju city, as well as other related public institutions to engage in the process of republishing the <Kwangju Diary>. In particular we will strive for securing related institutions' budget in order for them to finance the publication of the <Kwangju Diary>.
